Meta Ads MCP: what it does and how to set it up

Meta's official Ads MCP lets Claude, ChatGPT and other AI tools read and manage your Meta ad account. Here is what it can do, how to connect it, and why your ads still need the Pixel and the Conversions API set up on your website.

Meta Ads MCP explained: what it does and how to set it up

The Meta Ads MCP is Meta's own connector that lets an AI assistant work inside your Meta ad account. You ask in plain English, and the assistant pulls reports, builds campaigns or checks your catalog for you. This guide covers what the Meta Ads MCP server can do, how to connect it in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Claude Code, and the one thing it leaves to you: the tracking on your website.

TLDR

  • The Meta Ads MCP is Meta's official, Meta-hosted MCP server for ads. You connect it to an AI tool at https://mcp.facebook.com/ads and sign in with Facebook.
  • It can report on campaigns, create and edit campaigns, ad sets and ads (new ones start paused), manage catalogs and custom audiences, run A/B tests and read signal health.
  • It works on your ad account, not your website. To send Pixel and Conversions API events from your site, pair it with a tracking setup such as Tyton's MCP, which has a Free plan.

What the Meta Ads MCP is

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call outside tools. Meta now runs its own MCP servers, and the developer hub calls them "official remote MCP servers" for Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Meta Ads (Meta for Developers, Connect AI Agents to Meta with MCP). If you have seen the term "meta mcp", this hub is where Meta lists all of them.

The ads one is described by Meta as "a Meta-hosted Model Context Protocol server that lets you manage Meta ads directly from an AI agent" (Ads MCP Server overview). The server address is https://mcp.facebook.com/ads (same page).

A few facts from Meta's own pages:

  • Launch. Meta announced "Meta ads AI connectors", the ads MCP server plus an ads CLI, in open beta on 29 April 2026 (Meta for Business news, 29 Apr 2026).
  • No developer setup needed. For the MCP, Meta says no developer credentials, API setup or coding are required (same announcement). You do not need your own Meta app (Get started).
  • Sign-in. With OAuth, your AI tool sends you to Facebook Login for Business, and Meta says "No manual token setup is required" (Get started).
  • Developer access. On 16 July 2026 Meta opened the ads MCP server to any developer with their own Meta app (News for Developers, 16 Jul 2026).
  • Admin rules. If you have full control of a business portfolio, you can block or limit what AI agents do on each ad account or catalog, such as creating campaigns or setting budgets above an amount. You find this in Meta Business Suite under Settings, then Integrations, then Ads MCP server (Meta Business Help Center). Meta's developer docs say these rules are in limited availability (Rules best practices), so you may not see the option yet.

What the Meta Ads MCP can do with your ad account

Meta groups the tools into seven areas (Ads MCP Server overview). Here is what each covers, with tool names from Meta's tool pages.

Reporting

Pull campaigns, ad sets and ads with spend, impressions, CTR, CPC, CPM and conversions (ads_get_ad_entities). There are also tools for your account's optimization score, performance trends over time, unusual changes in performance, and industry benchmarks (Comprehensive reporting tools).

Ad creation and management

Create campaigns, ad sets and ads, update them, and switch them on. Meta's docs say new campaigns, ad sets and ads are created paused, and ads_activate_entity is the step that "starts spending budget". Other tools list your ad accounts and Pages, build and preview creatives, search the public Ad Library, boost an Instagram post, and create or edit custom audiences (Ad creation and management tools). Meta's help page adds that "All ads are paused by default until you set them live" (Meta Business Help Center).

Catalogs

Create a catalog, add, edit and delete products, build product sets, manage feeds and feed rules, read catalog diagnostics, and connect event sources such as a pixel to a catalog (Catalog tools).

Signals and datasets

List your datasets (pixels), read their setup, event volume and Event Match Quality scores, and manage event rules and parameters on an existing pixel. Meta notes a new event rule "starts inactive" (Signals and datasets tools).

Help and troubleshooting

Find delivery-blocking errors on campaigns, ad sets, ads or the account, and search Meta Business Help Center articles (Help and troubleshooting tools).

A/B tests and conversion lift studies

Check eligibility, then create, read and edit A/B tests, and create and read conversion lift studies (A/B test and lift study tools).

Activity logs

Read the change history of an ad account, the same view as the campaign history page in Ads Manager (Activity log tools).

Meta's help page also says: "Any actions taken on your behalf require your authorization through the AI agent." (Meta Business Help Center). Meta notes you may not have every tool yet, and you can ask your AI tool which tools it has.

How to connect the Meta Ads MCP

Meta's help page lists ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code and Perplexity as supported AI agents, with https://mcp.facebook.com/ads as the server URL for all of them (Meta Business Help Center). Meta's developer hub also lists Claude Desktop, ChatGPT (Web), Codex and Cursor as clients Meta has validated (Connect AI Agents to Meta with MCP).

Claude and Claude Desktop

Meta points Claude users to Claude's guide for custom connectors. On Pro and Max plans, the steps in that guide are:

  1. Go to Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it (for example "Meta Ads") and paste https://mcp.facebook.com/ads as the server URL.
  4. Review the sign-in settings and click Add.
  5. Connect, and sign in with Facebook when asked.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds the connector under Organization settings, then Connectors, and members then connect it. Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector. Source: Claude Help Center, Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP.

In a chat, click +, then Connectors, and switch Meta Ads on.

Claude Code

Meta's help page links to Claude Code's guide for adding a remote HTTP server. Add the server, then sign in from inside Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http meta-ads https://mcp.facebook.com/ads

Then run /mcp in Claude Code and follow the sign-in steps in your browser (Claude Code docs, MCP).

If you connect through your own Meta app, Meta's developer docs give this version with your app ID (Get started):

claude mcp add --transport http --client-id <META_APP_ID> meta-ads https://mcp.facebook.com/ads

ChatGPT

Meta's help page links to OpenAI's guide for adding a custom MCP server in ChatGPT on the web (Meta Business Help Center). Add a custom MCP server, use https://mcp.facebook.com/ads as the server URL, choose OAuth, and sign in with Facebook. ChatGPT's menus change often, so follow OpenAI's guide for the exact clicks.

Cursor

Meta lists Cursor App and Cursor CLI as validated clients (Connect AI Agents to Meta with MCP), but Meta's setup pages do not give Cursor steps. Check Meta's setup page for the current instructions before you connect it.

Example prompts for the Meta Ads MCP

Once it is connected, try prompts like these. Swap in your own account and campaign names.

  1. "List my ad accounts and tell me which ones spent money in the last 30 days."
  2. "Compare cost per purchase for my top 5 campaigns this month against last month, and flag anything that got worse."
  3. "Why is my 'Spring sale' ad set not delivering? Check for errors."
  4. "Create a paused traffic campaign for my new landing page with a $20 daily budget. Show me everything before you switch it on."
  5. "Check the Event Match Quality for my pixel and tell me which match keys are missing."
  6. "Set up an A/B test between my two best-performing creatives in the 'Prospecting' campaign."

What the Meta Ads MCP doesn't do

The Meta Ads MCP works on your ad account. It does not touch your website code. See what your page sends today with the free Facebook Pixel checker.

  • It doesn't install the Pixel or the Conversions API on your website. In Meta's signals tool list, the tools read dataset setup and quality and manage event rules and parameters on a pixel you already have. We found no tool in Meta's tool docs that adds Pixel code to your site or sends server events from it (Signals and datasets tools).
  • Your results depend on your tracking. Meta's ad delivery system optimizes on the events you send. Meta says data from the Conversions API "is less impacted than the Meta Pixel by browser loading errors, connectivity issues and ad blockers", and that using it alongside the Pixel "helps the ad delivery system decrease your cost per result" (About Conversions API). Meta also recommends sending events as close to real time as possible (Conversions API best practices). An AI assistant can read every report you have, but if purchases never reach Meta, the reports and the optimization are both missing them.

This is where Tyton fits. Tyton is an MCP server too, and it works on the other side: your website. Your AI tool uses Tyton to audit your current tracking, then sets up the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API in your own code, and Tyton's hosted server sends the events to Meta. Tyton is in Claude's connector directory, so you can connect it in Claude or Claude Desktop from there.

The Free plan covers 1 site and 10,000 events a month, with no card. Starter is $17 a month. See pricing.

If you are fixing a Pixel that already exists, our guide on fixing the Meta Pixel with Claude walks through it. If you would rather check things inside Events Manager, the free Tyton Chrome extension sets up and checks your Pixel and Conversions API there, with your approval for each change.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Meta Ads MCP official?

Yes. Meta built it and hosts it. Meta's developer hub lists it among its "official remote MCP servers" (Connect AI Agents to Meta with MCP), and the server runs at https://mcp.facebook.com/ads (Ads MCP Server overview).

Is the Meta Ads MCP free?

Meta's announcement and developer docs do not list a price for the ads MCP server. Check Meta's announcement and help page for current terms. You still pay for the ads you run, and your AI tool's own plan applies. For example, Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector.

Does the Meta Ads MCP work with Claude?

Yes. Meta lists Claude and Claude Code as supported AI agents (Meta Business Help Center), and Claude Desktop and Claude Code as validated clients (Connect AI Agents to Meta with MCP). In Claude, add it as a custom connector with https://mcp.facebook.com/ads.

Is "Facebook Ads MCP" the same thing?

People search for both names. Meta calls its server the "Meta Ads MCP" or the "ads MCP server", and it is hosted on a facebook.com address: https://mcp.facebook.com/ads. If you are looking for Meta's official Facebook Ads MCP server, that is the URL to use.

Does the Meta Ads MCP set up the Pixel or the Conversions API?

No. It can read your pixel's setup, event volume and Event Match Quality, and manage event rules on a pixel you already have (Signals and datasets tools). It does not add tracking code to your website or send server events. Tyton's MCP does that part.

Can I use the Meta Ads MCP with Tyton?

Yes. They are separate MCP servers, and your AI tool can have both connected. Use Tyton to set up the Pixel and the Conversions API on your site, then use the Meta Ads MCP to report on and manage the campaigns that use those events. Start with Tyton's Free plan.
